Desertification is literally the spreading of deserts. In 1999 the Gobi Desert expanded a staggering 52, 400 km.
The
UNCCD (The United Nations Convention to combat desertification) defines desertification
as:“Land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting
from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities.”
Desertification occurs when
there is a long-term failure to balance human demand and the amount the ecosystem
can supply. Desertification is the root cause of poverty and in order to increase
human well-being we must stop the degradation of our land and dry land ecosystems.
10-20% of dry lands are already degraded. CAD Coalition Against Desertification
is working to combat desertification. Our goal is to promote awareness and
get people working together at a community level to prevent desertification.
250 million people are affected by desertification. It’s time to protect
our earth and put an end to poverty. This website contains everything you
need to know about the causes of desertification and its devastating effects.
